Did you know that most internet browser giants are secretly collecting stuff about you. And you don’t know what they do with that information or where it goes. You might not even be bothered – but think for a moment about it. Free will is our ability to make choices unconstrained by certain factors. But imagine a world where all sorts of organisations know everything about you, your likely habits and so on and the use of that to subtly influence your choices in the world without you knowing. This is already happening – do a search these days and see how many products come up that ‘might interest you’ (based on covert surveillance of your past internet behaviour). You won’t have asked for that information but it is presented to you because they know it will influence you and that you’re likely to be ‘bought in’. This isn’t free will any more – it’s a world that is being monopolised by giants who then liaise with other giants (or semi giants) to get what they want from you.
I think it was Mark Zuckerberg (the founder of Facebook) who once said ‘You are the product we sell’. Take note of his words. There is NO such thing as a free lunch. If you are being given something for free, it’s because YOU ARE THE PRODUCT THAT IS BEING SOLD. If you would like a safe and reliable browser that is just as good the Giants (and with less spam), try something like DuckDuckGo: www.duckduckgo.com
And on a related note, watch the film ‘Minority Report’, it will open your eyes to the possibility of a future dystopia (an imagined place or state in which everything is unpleasant or bad, typically a totalitarian or environmentally degraded one.)
You still have the power to choose your own destiny. Choose duckduckgo.com who don’t monitor what you are doing.
