Doctor, you can be less stressed

By Susan Kersley
Personal Development & Work Balance Doctor

Notice how your most stressed colleagues get through their day:

They never take a break for lunch because they haven’t time to get through the patients anyway.

They take work home with them because there is so much to do they can’t get it done during the day.

They never go out with friends because they have very few of them. Because they are always too busy to accept any social invitation no-one asks them any more and they never invite anyone to meet them after work because the concept of ‘after work’ is foreign to them.

They rarely smile or laugh because they take their job so seriously. Life is too serious to laugh, isn’t it? You can’t get on with the jobs in hand when you make fun of a situation.

They rarely take a holiday because they have too much to do and what would you do on holiday anyway. They occasionally make an exception and attend medical conferences.

They don’t know what relaxation means because they think that if they stop they might never be able to start again.

Notice how life changes for the better when you change your habits in this way.

Notice how you have more energy, feel happier, get through the workload more quickly and generally begin to enjoy life much more.

They only read medical books and journals and are horrified at the idea of reading a novel because they think that they must use any spare minute keeping up to date, reading the latest journals and making sure that they don’t miss any important piece of medical news.
Of course, they could choose to:

  • keep to designated time when seeing patients
  • take a break for lunch
  • stop taking work home
  • meet friends
  • have a laugh and don’t take life so seriously
  • have a regular holiday
  • take a few moments every day to relax
  • read a novel

Notice how life changes for the better when you change your habits in this way.

Notice how you have more energy, feel happier, get through the workload more quickly and generally begin to enjoy life much more.

How IT ALL STARTED
WHAT WE'RE ABOUT
WHO ARE WE FOR?

Bradford VTS was created by Dr. Ramesh Mehay, a Programme Director for Bradford GP Training Scheme back in 2001. Over the years, it has seen many permutations.  At the time, there were very few resources for GP trainees and their trainers so Bradford decided to create one FOR EVERYONE.

So, we see Bradford VTS as  the INDEPENDENT vocational training scheme website providing a wealth of free medical resources for GP trainees, their trainers and TPDs everywhere and anywhere.  We also welcome other health professionals – as we know the site is used by both those qualified and in training – such as Associate Physicians, ANPs, Medical & Nursing Students.

Our fundamental belief is to openly and freely share knowledge to help learn and develop with each other.  Feel free to use the information – as long as it is not for a commercial purpose.

We have a wealth of downloadable resources and we also welcome copyright-free educational material from all our users to help build our rich resource (send to bradfordvts@gmail.com).

Our sections on (medical) COMMUNICATION SKILLS and (medical) TEACHING & LEARNING are perhaps the best and most comprehensive on the world wide web (see white-on-black menu header section on the homepage).
