Things Ram uses - everything IT. All my digital secrets in one place.

Microsoft Office & Writing

LIBREOFFICE– a free alternative to Microsoft’s Expensive Office collection of software.   Works with all MS Offices documents.  Alternatively, try THINKFREE-OFFICE.

Word Press

Digital Teaching

Productivity

  • Dragon Dictate – still the best speech recognition software out there.  Saves me a tonne of typing!
  • POMODORO-TRACKER.COM – I love this site for helping me keep on top of my to do things.  If you don’t know about the Pomodoro Technique, YouTube it.
  • PaperPort by Kofax – one of the best desktop file organisers.  Scan and organiser all your home physical documents – and keep your house paper-light.

Audio-Visual & Drawing

  • INKSCAPE – Free vector graphics program for creating drawing or manipulating photos.   A little complicated to learn at first but some excellent YouTube tutorials.  Photoshop alternative.
  •  GOOGLE SKETCHUP – particularly good for 3D modelling.   Design your own kitchen and garden.  Turn educational concepts into 3D diagrams.
  • SNAG-IT – amazing software.  Truly is, worth every penny.  Capture screen shots of your PC.  Record video off your PC.  Even do video tutorials on how to do things on your PC or on a website.
  • POWTOONS – one of the best platforms for creating snazzy video animations.
  • FLATICON – wonderful icons for using in things like word documents and presentations
  • UNSPLASH & PIXABAY – for copyright images you wish to use in documents, presentations and your website.

Managing Files & Folders

  • ANT RENAMER – a free program that makes easier the renaming of lots of files and folders by using specified settings. KEN RENAME is another one that does the same thng.

Miscellaneous

  • THE WORD FINDER is an anagram solver.   I love this website because you can use it to create a mnemonic out of a list of things to remember.  WORDFINDERS.COM is another great one which allows two words or more.

Maaging Tax, Money and Finances

  • BUXFER – a great software to help manage your finances.   Costs around £60 per year but it is brilliant.  Does everything for you (almost).
  • MONEY DASHBOARD – another great money management tool, which is free.  Not as good as BUXFER (but is getting there!).
  • If you have been a user of Microsoft Money in the past, use one of the above.
  • Read my review here.

  • Ninite – one of the best places to find free software.   I love this site.  Remember, be careful when downloading free software off the net.  Don’t just download from anywhere – files can be full of viruses, bugs or spyware.  And make sure you have a good anti-virus and internet security software on your computer before installing anything. Ninite say they are safe.  Find free zip extraction tools, free pdf readers etc. Also check out…

Many of you who know me know that I am into my little gadgets, the internet and generally electronic ways of making life easier.  Therefore, I’ve listed a number of fab websites, software and gadgets below.   And the good stuff doesn’t stop there.  I’ve also included some top tips for the various Microsoft Office programs that many of us use (viz. Word, PowerPoint and Outlook).  I update these on a regular basis so please be sure to come back again. By sharing some of these things I hope your lives will be made easier too.  If you have anything you’d like to share, please email me on ramesh.mehay@googlemail.com .    Click on an corner:

Everyone needs to look at this website to check how secure the passwords we use for things like our banks are. Seriously, plug in your password and it will tell you how long it would take a hacker to crack it. 109 years is good but 169 days is bad and 1 hour is simply suicidal.

How IT ALL STARTED
WHAT WE'RE ABOUT
WHO ARE WE FOR?

Bradford VTS was created by Dr. Ramesh Mehay, a Programme Director for Bradford GP Training Scheme back in 2001. Over the years, it has seen many permutations.  At the time, there were very few resources for GP trainees and their trainers so Bradford decided to create one FOR EVERYONE.

So, we see Bradford VTS as  the INDEPENDENT vocational training scheme website providing a wealth of free medical resources for GP trainees, their trainers and TPDs everywhere and anywhere.  We also welcome other health professionals – as we know the site is used by both those qualified and in training – such as Associate Physicians, ANPs, Medical & Nursing Students.

Our fundamental belief is to openly and freely share knowledge to help learn and develop with each other.  Feel free to use the information – as long as it is not for a commercial purpose.

We have a wealth of downloadable resources and we also welcome copyright-free educational material from all our users to help build our rich resource (send to bradfordvts@gmail.com).

Our sections on (medical) COMMUNICATION SKILLS and (medical) TEACHING & LEARNING are perhaps the best and most comprehensive on the world wide web (see white-on-black menu header section on the homepage).
